The event attracted nearly 500 attendees this year, including athletes, celebrities and industry professionals. Also in attendance were the esteemed dinner honorees, including NBA Rookie of the Year, Blake Griffin, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Troy Polamalu and Alpine Skier and Olympic Gold Medalist, Lindsey Vonn. The After-Party played host to many other amazing names in sports. Michael Strahan, Chuck Liddell and Larry Fitzgerald, along with a host of other athletes and special guests showed up in numbers for the After-Party. The plush atmosphere coupled with a lavish casino theme, presented in part by The Dealer Dolls, made for an upscale and classy affair.

Michael Irvin with BHG Grocery Tote“We at TEAM BHG and the Blood Heart Group felt that we had to be a part of such an important charity event as the Cedar Sinai Sports Spectacular. As an athlete myself, I understand the importance that we have to society and that we (athletes) are one of the greatest resources available to help and assist in the betterment of others. Considering this is the largest event in the world of its kind, BHG HAD to be involved!” Owner, Michael Gomez

Michael Strahan with BHG Grocery ToteCedar Sinai has put on the CSSS for 10 years The Sports Spectacular has raised more than $21 million to benefit the life saving work of the Cedars Sinai Medical Institute over the years. This year the athletes and guest raised 1.3 million for the Medical Genetics Institute at Cedars Sinai Medical Center.

On a recent trip to Europe, Michael sought to learn more about the life of BHG figure Oskar Schindler by visiting the Auschwitz network of concentration camps and Schindler’s factories in Poland. Upwards of one million Jews were killed at Auschwitz; Oskar Schindler was able to save almost 1,200 people from extermination using his personal funds. During World War II, areas of Poland were controlled politically and socially by Germany, making Schindler’s work all the more dangerous and impressive.

Schindler’s factories were equipped with medical offices and a small school, giving the imprisoned Jews opportunities not only for survival, but for health and education. Michael was amazed at having the experience of being at Auschwitz and in Schindler’s office, “It was a really humbling experience and something that everyone in the world should have.” Oskar Schindler’s legacy has saved not only the original 1,200 Jews, but also their tens of thousands of descendants. Visiting the extermination camps is a reminder that without heroes who stand up to tyranny, too often places like Auschwitz become a reality and a testament to the wrongs in human beings. Michael says, “This makes you realize how important education is. This is one of the main reasons why BHG exists!”
